We recommend the best small camera for overseas trips
Want to know the best small camera for overseas trips? For under $100? That includes wi-fi AND a 12X optical zoom for pictures better than any smartphone can take? Without taking up any more room than a deck of playing cards?
The Nikon CoolPix s6800 refurbished and guaranteed for between $69-79.00!
If we had to take one point-n-shoot camera with us overseas and didn’t want to spend too much or wanted to be able to leave it behind for staff or the next team or group of volunteers, it would have to be the Coolpix 6800.
What makes this Nikon the best small camera for overseas trips? Full HD video, WiFi, 16mp images, amazing lens/zoom, great low light pics, stereo sound, all for under $100 bucks! Yes, it’s a refurb, BUT you get a full 90-day Nikon Warranty and its:
- Inspected, tested and certified by Nikon to meet original factory specs
- Performs like brand new
- Has minimal to no signs of prior use and is in mint or nearly-mint condition
WiFi allows you to snap shots and have them appear on your smartphone or tablet almost instantaneously, or on DropBox so you don’t clog up your memory stick. You can even use your smartphone as a remote control to take pictures with the camera from a distance – For self-portraits, for getting close to animals or even taking shots without people being aware or self-conscious.
I like the low-light CMOS when traveling which allows you to shoot without a flash indoors, at concerts or parties, or at night without having to use the flash. I also use it paired with a micro Joby Gorillapod (tripod) and/or our drop-in Peak Designs capture clip to get the full use out of this little camera. (Here is a little review I made demonstrating a CaptureClip attached to a bag and using videoing while walking around.) I do recommend getting a second Lithium battery.
Video has COOLPIX S6800 Hybrid VR (Vibration Reduction) that auto-activates and combats camera shake, but you should know that the camera doesn’t have auto-stabilization. Still, the wide angle/digital zoom on this little camera is amazing (See video below). Here is a look at the camera:
And a video on how to connect the camera to a wi-fi enabled device (like a smartphone):
You can also use the camera mode to share your image.
Use Wi-Fi to download images off the camera.

If you are going overseas and are looking for an excellent inexpensive camera or second camera for quick shots or if volunteering, that you can leave with local staff or for the next group of volunteers to use, this is one of the best small cameras we can think of for overseas use. Note that the charger uses a U.S.-style charging cable, so bring along an adapter!
