Chiang Rai is a province in northern Thailand. Chiang Rai is known as the gateway to Myanmar, Laos and southern China, otherwise known as the Golden Triangle. There are many tours to Chiang Rai and the rest of the Golden Triangle from Chiang Mai.
One of the most well-known spots in Chiang Rai is the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun). The temple compound has been completely rebuilt by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a local artist. The renovated temple opened in 1997, but the renovations are not finished. It is known as the White Temple because it is all white. Like most temple compounds, pictures tell stories and the life philosophy of the Buddha. Outside the temple are two statues, the Angel of the White Temple (depicting a guardian angel) and Hands in Hell (depicting forms of torture in hell, souls who thirst for freedom that continues to appeal but still in the law accordingly). The inside of the temple shows the journey of human life before it reaches Buddha. One of the interesting things inside the temple is that the portrayal is done in a modern way. There are many people, both real and fictional, from pop culture, such as Spiderman, Michael Jackson, Terminator, and Harry Potter.
Baan Dam, or the Black House, is in the middle of the city. The grounds have almost 40 small black houses build in various and unique styles. It is a museum with collections of art, animal bones, baskets, and other things, from around the world. The Night Market Walking Street (Thanon Khon Dern) holds a daily night market, where you can buy a variety of typical Thai food, clothes, Chiang Rai souvenirs, and other things.
The Karen people are a hill tribe that live in the rural area of Chiang Rai. This tribe is one of the most unique tribes in the world because the women wear copper rings around their necks. They begin in childhood with just one or two, then continue to add more into adulthood. The Karen believe that the more copper rings a woman has on her neck, the more beautiful she is. These are just a few of the fun things to do in Chiang Rai! Check them out on your next visit to this great region!
