Culture is one of the most important things owned by each country, and Russia is no exception. Russia is known for its variety of folk dances. Traditional Russian folk dance is as broad and diverse as the nation itself. The first dances appeared in the 10th century when Slavic tribes moved into Russia. The early dances were usually performed by the lower class. The upper class would watch the performers dance, rather than participate.
Russian folk costumes are also very diverse. Most of them are colorful with rich ornaments and embroidery; each dress is designed with great detail. Every district has their own style. Many of the costumes were based on specific holidays. Below is the list for some of the popular folk dances in Russia:
Khorovod, also known as Tanok in Ukrainian and Karagod in Belarussian, is not only the most popular folk dance but also the most ancient of Russia. Khorovod is a traditional Slavic art form that combines circle dance and chorus singing. Dancers stand in a circle (resembling the solar disk) and move from east to west. This dance is performed during three seasons, spring, summer and autumn. This round dance is considered a symbol of beauty because it is reflects distinctive traits of Russian character such as joyfulness, creativity and enthusiasm.
Barynya, which literally means “landlady” or woman of higher class, is a traditional Russian folk dance that combines chastushka (a traditional folk poem often in the form of satire) with spirited dancing. The dancing usually has no set choreography and consists mostly of fancy stomping and squatting.
Troika is also known as “trio dance.” Traditionally the dance is performed by two women and one man. However, now this dance is mostly performed by three women, or sometimes a group of people performing the dance with several groups of three performing at once. The word “troika” in Russia means “three horses.” Therefore, this dance has horse-like movements.
